Day 104: Take Twelve of Chapter One

In a recording studio in Novosibirsk, an actor is reading the opening of an audiobook while a sound engineer listens through headphones.

    «В ворота гостиницы губернского города NN въехала довольно красивая рессорная небольшая бричка...»

    'Through the gates of the hotel in the provincial town of NN drove a rather handsome small sprung britzka...'

    Стоп, простите, опять посторонний шум: что-то щёлкнуло прямо на «бричке». Давайте ещё дубль.

    Stop, sorry, another stray noise: something clicked right on 'britzka'. Let's do another take.

    Это двенадцатый дубль первой главы, молодой человек. Гоголь, по-моему, весь первый том быстрее написал.

    This is the twelfth take of chapter one, young man. I think Gogol wrote the whole first volume faster.

    У Гоголя не было микрофона, который слышит всё. Сначала шуршала страница, потом скрипел стул, теперь вот щелчок.

    Gogol didn't have a microphone that hears everything. First a page rustled, then the chair creaked, and now there's a click.

    Щелчок, между прочим, это мои часы, они тридцать лет со мной. Ладно, снимаю. Поехали.

    That click, for your information, is my watch, it's been with me for thirty years. All right, I'm taking it off. Here we go.

    Запись пошла. И, если можно, чуть медленнее на «рессорной»: у вас на ней язык заплетается.

    We're recording. And if you could, a little slower on 'sprung': your tongue gets tangled on it.

    Хорошо, медленнее... «В ворота гостиницы губернского города NN въехала довольно красивая рессорная...»

    All right, slower... 'Through the gates of the hotel in the provincial town of NN drove a rather handsome sprung...'

    Стоп! Опять шум, какое-то низкое урчание, будто трубы гудят за стеной. Вы тоже слышите?

    Stop! Another noise, some kind of low rumbling, like pipes humming behind the wall. Can you hear it too?

    Не ищите, это не трубы, это я проголодался: с утра ни крошки. Объявляйте перерыв, а бричка пусть пока постоит у ворот.

    Don't bother looking, it's not the pipes, it's me, I'm starving: not a crumb since morning. Call a break, and the britzka can wait at the gates for now.
