On a hot July afternoon in a Voronezh office, the system administrator calls the office manager over with bad news about the server room.

Дим, аврал: в серверной сдох кондиционер, там уже сорок, как в парилке. Если так пойдёт, через час всё упадёт.
Dima, emergency: the air conditioning in the server room has died, it's already forty in there, like a steam room. If this goes on, everything will crash within the hour.

Hang on, what does 'crash' mean in plain language? I'm the one who has to explain it to the director.

По-человечески: серверы перегреются и выключатся, а с ними почта и бухгалтерия. Мастер будет только завтра.
In plain language: the servers will overheat and shut down, and email and accounting will go with them. The repairman won't be here till tomorrow.

Сегодня аванс, так что бухгалтерия должна работать кровь из носу. Что можно сделать прямо сейчас?
Today's the mid-month pay advance, so accounting has to be working come what may. What can we do right now?

Тащи все вентиляторы из офиса и лёд из морозилки в кафе внизу. А я пока отключу всё, без чего до завтра проживём.
Bring every fan in the office and the ice from the freezer in the café downstairs. Meanwhile I'll switch off everything we can live without until tomorrow.

Ice? Are you serious? We're not storing fish.

Серьёзнее некуда. Ставишь тазик со льдом перед вентилятором, и вот тебе кондиционер для бедных.
Dead serious. You put a basin of ice in front of a fan, and there's your poor man's air conditioner.

All right, I'm off. And if it all goes down by evening anyway, what then, everyone goes home?
