Day 124: The Case of the Shrunken Suit

At a magistrate's court in Kursk, a judge hears a man who is suing a dry cleaner's over his wedding suit, with the owner of the dry cleaner's answering the claim.

    Суд выслушал позицию истца. Итак, вы утверждаете, что после химчистки костюм сел на два размера?

    The court has heard the plaintiff's position. So you claim that after dry cleaning the suit shrank two sizes?

    Именно так, Ваша честь. Я в нём женился, а теперь пиджак не сходится, и я прошу взыскать с ответчика ущерб в полном объёме.

    Exactly, Your Honour. I got married in it, and now the jacket won't do up, and I ask that the defendant pay the damages in full.

    Ваша честь, мы строго следовали рекомендациям на ярлыке. Если ткань садится, претензии к фабрике, а не к химчистке.

    Your Honour, we followed the instructions on the care label to the letter. If the fabric shrinks, the complaint is for the manufacturer, not the dry cleaner's.

    Вопрос к истцу. Когда, позвольте узнать, состоялась свадьба, о которой вы упомянули?

    A question for the plaintiff. When, may I ask, did the wedding you mentioned take place?

    Двенадцать лет назад. Но костюм, прошу занести в протокол, все эти годы бережно хранился в шкафу, в чехле.

    Twelve years ago. But the suit, and I ask that this be entered in the record, was kept carefully in the wardrobe all those years, in a cover.

    Занесём. Тем не менее уточню: после свадьбы и до химчистки вы его хоть раз надевали?

    So noted. Nevertheless, let me clarify: between the wedding and the dry cleaning, did you put it on even once?

    Ну... нет, повода не было. А тут у тёщи юбилей, я отдал его почистить и получил вот это.

    Well... no, there was no occasion. And then my mother-in-law had a big birthday, I took it in to be cleaned and got this back.

    Позвольте, Ваша честь: мы при приёме всё замеряем. Вот квитанция: и до, и после чистки костюм точно соответствует размеру на ярлыке.

    If I may, Your Honour: we measure everything when we take an item in. Here's the receipt: before and after cleaning, the suit matches the size on the label exactly.

    Выходит, за двенадцать лет костюм не изменился ни на сантиметр, чего, при всём уважении, не скажешь об истце. Исковые требования поддерживаете?

    So in twelve years the suit hasn't changed by a single centimetre, which, with all due respect, cannot be said of the plaintiff. Do you maintain your claim?
