Day 30: A Jubilee for Sixty Guests

At a restaurant in Krasnodar, a man plans his grandfather's eightieth birthday party with the manager.

    Добрый день, хотим у вас отметить юбилей деда, восемьдесят лет. Гостей человек шестьдесят.

    Good afternoon, we'd like to celebrate my grandfather's eightieth here. About sixty guests.

    Поздравляю! Банкет у нас от четырёх тысяч на человека. Какой у вас бюджет?

    Congratulations! Our banquets start from four thousand per person. What's your budget?

    Скинулись всей роднёй, вышло сто пятьдесят тысяч. На шестьдесят человек хватит?

    The whole family chipped in, it came to a hundred and fifty thousand. Is that enough for sixty people?

    В принципе можно, но выходит по две с половиной тысячи. Я бы предложил фуршет.

    In principle it's doable, but that works out at two and a half thousand a head. I'd suggest a buffet.

    Фуршет? Чтобы дед-казак стоя с тарелочки ел? Да ни в жизнь!

    A buffet? My Cossack grandfather eating off a little plate standing up? Not on your life!

    Понимаю. Тогда столы оставим, но меню попроще: без рыбной нарезки, одно горячее.

    I understand. Then we keep the tables, but a simpler menu: no fish platter, one hot dish.

    Годится! Только место для гармониста оставьте: без «Ой, то не вечер» дед юбилей не засчитает.

    That'll do! Just leave room for an accordion player: without 'Oy, to ne vecher' Grandpa won't count it as a jubilee.
