Day 101 of 125

Day 101: Two Critics After the Premiere

Walking down a snowy street in Perm after the premiere of an avant-garde opera based on Pushkin's The Queen of Spades, two rival critics, the older Vadim Sergeyevich and a younger colleague, talk over what they have just seen.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title.
  2. Read the dialogue and its translation. The audio for this lesson is coming soon.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Russian audio, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

  1. A

Well, colleague, did you survive? Three hours of atonal music, a chorus of croupiers and Hermann in an online casino... Tchaikovsky, I imagine, is turning in his grave.

  2. B

Oh, come now, what has Tchaikovsky got to do with it? For the first time in years nobody fell asleep at the opera, not even up in the gallery.

  3. A

They didn't sleep because they were handing out roulette chips in the interval. And behind the shock tactics it's all derivative: The Queen of Spades retold in the language of advertising.

  4. B

Then Tchaikovsky, if it comes to that, is derivative of Pushkin too. Today's Hermann just plays with his phone instead of cards.

  5. A

Right, I'm writing this down: "Innovation that doesn't know what to do with itself..." No, too soft. "Three, Seven, Flop." There, the headline writes itself.

  6. B

And my opening goes like this: "Perm has proved once again that opera is not a museum but a living organism."

  7. A

A living organism with a smoke machine. Though I won't deny that the countertenor as the Countess was rather good, painful as it is for me to admit it.

  8. B

The ice is breaking, as Ostap Bender used to say. Come on, admit it: in the finale, when Hermann whispers "What is our life? A game!" to the dead screen, you reached for your handkerchief, didn't you?

  9. A

That, young man, was an allergy to stage smoke. Still, all right, there was one real minute in the finale. One out of a hundred and eighty.

  10. B

And since this is an evening of confessions, I nearly nodded off in the second act. No director's concept can save video art about share prices.

  11. A

Is that so? Then a gentlemen's agreement: not a word in our reviews about your second act or my handkerchief.

  12. B

Agreed, Vadim Sergeyevich. Though you must admit, if two critics trudge through the snowdrifts all the way to the hotel still arguing, the production is already a success.
