   Wait, don't get in yet. I've counted the change: the cashier gave me a thousand too much.

   Seriously? What luck! Dad, come on, that's their problem, the shop's huge, it won't go broke.

   Магазин, может, и не обеднеет. А вот вечером у кассира будет недостача, и кто, по-твоему, её покроет?

   The shop may not go broke. But tonight the cashier's till will be short, and who do you think will cover it?

   Как бы не так. Недостачу кассиры часто покрывают из своих, так что та девушка отдаст тысячу из зарплаты.

   Fat chance. Cashiers often make up shortfalls out of their own pockets, so that girl will pay the thousand out of her wages.

   Fine, but she made the mistake herself, not us. Everyone's responsible for their own work, you say so yourself.

   I do. But if you'd sat at the till all day and then had to pay out of your own pocket, would you be laughing?

   There you go. A thousand may not be much, but it's someone else's, and no good will come of it. As Grandad used to say, ill-gotten goods never prosper.
