   Boris Yevgenyevich, we have a catastrophe: the freezer was unplugged overnight, it's minus twelve inside instead of minus eighty.

   Так, без паники. Там же образцы всей годовой серии опытов... Кто отключил, выяснили?

   Right, no panic. That's where the samples from the whole year's series of experiments are... Have you found out who unplugged it?

   Вилка лежала рядом с розеткой, а в розетку был включён полотёр. Думаю, долго гадать не придётся.

   The plug was lying next to the socket, and the floor polisher was plugged into it. I don't think we'll have to guess for long.

   Это я, виноват. Мне велели коридор натереть, розетка под рукой одна, вот я шнур и вытащил.

   It was me, my fault. I was told to polish the corridor, there was only one socket to hand, so I pulled the cord out.

   Fyodor Ivanovich, with all due respect, do you realise that's a year's work by six people? It says 'Do not thaw' right there on the door.

   Теперь понимаю. Я думал, как дома: холодильник постоит ночь закрытым, ничего ему не сделается.

   I realise now. I thought it was like at home: a fridge will be fine standing closed for one night.

   Fyodor Ivanovich, tell me, was there any sticker on the socket?

   Была, «Не выключать», только почему-то на соседней розетке. Я её и не трогал.

   There was, 'Do not switch off', only for some reason on the next socket along. I didn't touch that one.

   Потому что эту наклейку я сам клеил в прошлом месяце и, выходит, промахнулся на одну розетку. Так что виноват не Фёдор Иванович, а заведующий лабораторией.

   Because I put that sticker up myself last month and, as it turns out, missed by one socket. So it's not Fyodor Ivanovich who's to blame, it's the head of the lab.

    Are you serious? And what do we do with the samples now, throw them out?

    Не спеши. Что ни делается, всё к лучшему: проверим, как наши белки переносят разморозку, чем не эксперимент? А розетки подпишем заново.

    Don't rush. Every cloud has a silver lining: we'll see how our proteins cope with thawing, isn't that an experiment too? And we'll label the sockets again.
