Day 59: A Second Signature Under the Varnish

   Миша, ты что там замер? Осторожнее с тампоном, в углу тонкие лессировки, их снять проще простого.

   Misha, why have you frozen? Careful with that swab, there are thin glazes in the corner, and they come off all too easily.

   Аркадий Борисович, посмотрите сами. Подпись Шишкина уходит вместе с лаком, а под ней проступают какие-то другие буквы.

   Arkady Borisovich, see for yourself. Shishkin's signature is coming off with the varnish, and some other letters are showing through underneath.

   Дай-ка лупу... Так. Подпись лежит поверх старого лака, а значит, нанесена много позже, чем писалась картина.

   Hand me the magnifier... Right. The signature sits on top of the old varnish, which means it was added long after the picture was painted.

   То есть подделка? Но холст, подрамник, красочный слой, всё ведь соответствует середине девятнадцатого века.

   So it's a fake? But the canvas, the stretcher, the paint layer, it all matches the mid-nineteenth century.

   Картина, по всей видимости, подлинная, подделана только подпись. Классический приём: берут добротный пейзаж малоизвестного мастера и дописывают громкое имя.

   The painting, by all appearances, is genuine; only the signature is forged. A classic trick: take a solid landscape by a little-known master and add a big name.

   Тут, если только я не ошибаюсь, читается «Н. Кудрин» и дата: шестьдесят второй год. Вы о таком слышали?

   Here, unless I'm mistaken, it reads 'N. Kudrin' and a date: 1862. Have you heard of him?

   Слышал, как не слышать. Ученик Академии, пейзажист, умер молодым, картин от него осталось с десяток.

   Of course I have. A student of the Academy, a landscape painter, died young, and barely a dozen of his paintings survive.

   Владелец ведь покупал её как Шишкина, за очень большие деньги. Как мы ему это скажем?

   But the owner bought it as a Shishkin, for a great deal of money. How are we going to tell him?

   As it is. He may well have suspected it himself: it's no accident he asked us to check the signature first.

    And what do we do about Shishkin's signature? Restore it, since we've taken it off, or leave it as is?

    We're restorers, Misha, not the forger's co-authors. Let the signature be the one the artist put there: Kudrin has waited a hundred and sixty years for this.
