   Я всё-таки считаю настоящим героем романа Воланда. Только он наводит порядок: наказывает взяточников, спасает рукопись, соединяет Мастера с Маргаритой.

   I still think the real hero of the novel is Woland. He alone sets things right: he punishes bribe-takers, saves the manuscript, brings the Master and Margarita together.

   Порядок у него, прямо скажем, своеобразный. Берлиозу голову отрезало, Лиходеева в Ялту зашвырнули, это, по-твоему, торжество справедливости?

   His idea of order is peculiar, to put it mildly. Berlioz gets his head cut off, Likhodeyev gets flung all the way to Yalta, is that your idea of justice triumphant?

   Это торжество логики! Берлиоз всю жизнь доказывал, что после смерти ничего нет, вот и получил по своей вере.

   It's logic triumphant! Berlioz spent his whole life proving there's nothing after death, so he got according to his faith.

   Твоя трактовка, Костя, прости, как осетрина второй свежести: до тебя её предлагали раз сто. Образ Воланда, впрочем, куда неоднозначнее, недаром эпиграф из «Фауста».

   Your reading, Kostya, forgive me, is like sturgeon of second freshness: it's been served up a hundred times before you. Woland, for that matter, is a far more ambiguous figure, the epigraph from Faust is there for a reason.

   Allow an old man to butt in. I read this novel in sixty-six, in the magazine Moskva, and back then we argued about exactly the same thing.

   In sixty-six? Nikolai Ivanovich, you'd have been ten at most back then.

   Десять, Костя, десять. Отец принёс журнал с работы, а куски, вырезанные цензурой, потом перепечатали на машинке и вклеили прямо между страницами.

   Ten, Kostya, ten. My father brought the magazine home from work, and later the passages the censors had cut were typed up and pasted in right between the pages.

    Сохранился, на даче, приезжай, покажу. Его и выбросить пытались, и на растопку пускали, а он тем не менее цел: обгорела только обложка.

    I do, at the dacha, come over and I'll show you. People tried to throw it out, they even used it to light the stove, and yet it's intact: only the cover got singed.
