   Look at this porcini! A stem like a little barrel, a cap the size of your palm... This is what it was worth getting up at five for.

   Красавец, не спорю. Только, Серёга, не хочу нагнетать, но этот пень с муравейником мы проходим уже в третий раз.

   A beauty, no argument. Only, Seryoga, I don't want to make a drama of it, but this is the third time we've walked past this stump with the anthill.

   Да ладно, тебе показалось. Хотя... пень и правда знакомый. Так, без паники: где машина?

   Come off it, you're imagining things. Although... that stump does look familiar. Right, no panic: where's the car?

   Если бы я знал, я бы не считал пни. Мы заблудились, Серёга, а телефоны сели ещё у болота.

   If I knew that, I wouldn't be counting stumps. We're lost, Seryoga, and both phones died back by the bog.

   Сели, заразы. Ничего, мох растёт с северной стороны, а машину мы оставили на просеке за ельником, к югу отсюда.

   Dead, the wretched things. Never mind, moss grows on the north side, and we left the car on the cutting past the spruce wood, south of here.

   Look carefully: on this pine there's moss on every side, and on the birch there's none at all. Your method, as we lawyers say, has no evidentiary value.

   Well, what about your compass? You were showing it off the whole way, as if you were heading for the North Pole.

   It shows where north is just fine. But where we are and where the cutting is, it unfortunately doesn't say.

   Quiet! Hear that? Clattering... It's a train!

    Точно, поезд. Железка идёт вдоль трассы, а машина в километре от переезда, я запомнил: ты там чуть колесо не пробил.

    It is, a train. The railway runs alongside the highway, and the car's a kilometre from the level crossing, I remember it: you nearly got a flat there.
