   Turned your recorder on again? All right, my boy, since it's for the family album, I'll tell you once more how I won your grandma.

   Go on, Grandpa, the full uncut version. Nineteen sixty-five, the Bolshoi Drama Theatre, and then what?

   У Товстоногова премьера, «Три сестры», билетов нет и не предвидится. Я всю ночь простоял на Фонтанке в пальтишке на рыбьем меху.

   Tovstonogov has a premiere, "Three Sisters", no tickets and none in sight. I stood all night on the Fontanka in a flimsy little coat with no warmth in it.

   А утром достал два билета, позвонил ей из автомата, и она сразу согласилась. Только вот я откопал на антресолях бабушкино письмо сестре, как раз шестьдесят пятого года.

   And in the morning you got two tickets, called her from a phone box, and she said yes straight away. Only I've dug a letter out of the top cupboard, one Grandma wrote to her sister in sixty-five, as it happens.

   A letter? Well, well, let's hear it. And what does my Galochka write?

   Читаю: «Витя, бедный, третий месяц ходит вокруг да около и робеет. Попросила тётю Зину из театральной кассы отложить два билета, пусть хоть так позовёт».

   I'm reading: "Poor Vitya has been hovering around me for three months, too shy to make a move. I asked Aunt Zina at the theatre box office to put two tickets aside, so at least he'll invite me that way."

   Постой, как это «отложить»? Я же сам стоял, сам доставал, уши себе на Фонтанке отморозил!

   Hold on, what do you mean, "put aside"? I stood there myself, I got them myself, I froze my ears off on the Fontanka!

   It gets better: "I had Lyova whisper to him that there'd be tickets at the box office in the morning. I'm only afraid he'll oversleep."

   Lyova! So that's how he knew everything... For sixty years I've been strutting like a peacock, and it turns out I was led up the garden path like a schoolboy.
