   Уважаемые члены кафедры, я исследую татарские заимствования в разговорной речи русскоязычных казанцев. Материал: сорок часов записей спонтанной речи, собранных за три года.

   Distinguished members of the department, I study Tatar loanwords in the spoken Russian of Kazan's Russian speakers. The material is forty hours of recorded spontaneous speech, collected over three years.

   Thank you, Timur Rashidovich. Allow me a question on methodology straight away: who exactly are your informants, and how was the sample put together?

   A hundred and twenty people aged eighteen to seventy, from every district of the city, men and women in equal numbers.

   При всём уважении, из приложения следует, что две трети информантов наши же студенты. Выборка, мягко говоря, смещена, и выводы годятся разве что для общежития.

   With all due respect, the appendix shows that two thirds of the informants are our own students. The sample is skewed, to put it mildly, and the conclusions hold for a student hostel at best.

   Позвольте возразить. Студентов действительно больше, но в четвёртой главе я сравниваю возрастные группы, и расхождения статистически незначимы.

   Allow me to object. There are indeed more students, but in chapter four I compare the age groups, and the differences are not statistically significant.

   Допустим. Тем не менее меня смущает второе положение, выносимое на защиту: «айда» у вас новое заимствование, а ведь оно ещё у Даля есть.

   Granted. Nevertheless, I'm troubled by the second of your propositions for defence: you treat "aida" as a new loanword, and yet it's already in Dahl's dictionary.

   Я не утверждаю, что оно новое. Речь о расширении функций: в Казани «айда» стало маркером региональной идентичности.

   I don't claim that it's new. The point is the expansion of its functions: in Kazan "aida" has become a marker of regional identity.

   Identity, marker... Fashionable words, however, are not yet proof. Where has the work been tested in public? How many publications does the candidate have in peer-reviewed journals?

   Позволю себе вмешаться. Публикаций пять, из них три в журналах из перечня ВАК, а доклад в Москве отмечен дипломом.

   Allow me to step in. There are five publications, three of them in journals on the Higher Attestation Commission list, and his paper in Moscow won a diploma.

    I see... Well then, I consider the pre-defence passed and recommend it for defence, subject to the comments made. For a good method, as we know, does not spoil with time.
