Day 198: The Flood Reaches the Porch

In April, in a dacha village on the Oka near Serpukhov, a young man watches the spring flood with his older neighbor.

    Ivan Stepanovich, the water's already at the porch! What do we do?

    Не бойся. Пятьдесят лет здесь живу, каждую весну так.

    Don't worry. I've lived here fifty years, it's like this every spring.

    Но дорога затоплена, машина не проедет. Такого я ещё не видел!

    But the road is flooded, no car can get through. I've never seen anything like it!

    Большая вода была, когда тебя ещё на свете не было. Давай вещи на чердак.

    There was a real flood back before you were even born. Let's get the things up to the attic.
