Day 119: Interviewing the School Janitor

In a school in Tula, a schoolboy writing for the school newspaper comes to interview the janitor.

    Mikhail Semyonovich, could I interview you for the school newspaper? I've prepared the questions.

    У меня? Да что про меня писать: подметаю да чиню.

    Me? What is there to write about me: I sweep and I fix things.

    Говорят, у вас золотые руки. Первый вопрос: давно вы в школе работаете?

    They say you can fix anything. First question: have you worked at the school long?

    Лет пятнадцать. А сорок лет назад я за городскую команду в воротах стоял.

    About fifteen years. And forty years ago I played in goal for the city team.

    Вы были вратарём? Настоящим? Почему же никто не знает?

    You were a goalkeeper? A real one? So why does nobody know?

    Так никто и не спрашивал. А выигранный нами кубок до сих пор в школьном спортзале стоит.

    Well, nobody ever asked. And the cup we won is still standing in the school gym.
