Day 120: Birch Sap Tastes Like Water

In a birch wood near Kaluga in April, a boy and his grandfather check the jar they tied to a tree.

    Деда, а сок уже капает? Можно я первый попробую?

    Grandpa, is the sap dripping yet? Can I try it first?

    Капает, но медленно, за час полбанки. Держи кружку, пробуй.

    It's dripping, but slowly, half a jar an hour. Here's a mug, try it.

    Фу, так это же почти вода! Я думал, он сладкий, как в магазине.

    Ugh, it's practically water! I thought it'd be sweet, like the juice in the shop.

    Сладость в нём есть, только лёгкая. А в магазине сок с сахаром.

    There is some sweetness in it, just a light one. The juice in the shop has sugar in it.

    Ради этой водички мы всё утро по лесу ходили? Лучше бы дома сидели.

    We spent the whole morning walking around the woods for this water? We'd have been better off staying at home.

    Ну, чего повесил нос? Из собранного сока я квас поставлю, по рецепту моего деда.

    Come on, why the long face? I'll make kvass from the sap we've collected, using my grandfather's recipe.

    Настоящий квас? Тогда одна банка, это капля в море: давай ещё три поставим, на весь класс!

    Real kvass? Then one jar is a drop in the ocean: let's put out three more, for my whole class!
