Day 134: A Goat for the Dacha

At the family dacha near Penza in May, a grandfather calls his son and grandson out into the garden.

    Ну, встречайте новую жительницу! Теперь у нас будет своё молоко, парное.

    Well, meet our new resident! Now we'll have our own milk, fresh every morning.

    Пап, ты серьёзно, коза? Это же пустить козла в огород, в самом прямом смысле!

    Dad, seriously, a goat? That's letting the goat into the vegetable patch, and I mean literally!

    Дед, а как её зовут? Можно, я имя придумаю?

    Grandpa, what's her name? Can I come up with one?

    Придумывай. А ты, Серёжа, не ворчи: коза, купленная за десять тысяч, себя ещё окупит.

    Go ahead. And you, Seryozha, stop grumbling: a goat bought for ten thousand will pay for herself yet.

    Пусть будет Маруся! Пап, смотри, вместо того чтобы сено есть, шляпу твою жуёт!

    Let's call her Marusya! Dad, look, instead of eating hay, she's chewing your hat!

    Мою любимую шляпу? Маруся, а ну отдай, я её двадцать лет носил!

    My favourite hat? Marusya, give that back right now, I've worn it for twenty years!

    Поздно, от шляпы одни поля остались. Не вешай нос, Серёжа, зато молоко будет вкуснее!

    Too late, all that's left of the hat is the brim. Chin up, Seryozha, the milk will be all the tastier for it!
