Day 136: Two Months Without an Elevator

On the stairs of a Moscow block of flats in summer, a young man walking up to the eleventh floor finds his elderly neighbour on the sixth-floor landing.

    Здравствуйте, Николай Петрович! Вы чего на подоконнике сидите, вам плохо?

    Hello, Nikolai Petrovich! Why are you sitting on the windowsill, are you feeling unwell?

    Да нет, отдыхаю. До девятого этажа с сумками, знаете, в мои годы не шутка.

    Oh no, I'm just resting. Up to the ninth floor with shopping bags, you know, is no joke at my age.

    Давайте я донесу, мне всё равно на одиннадцатый. А обещанный новый лифт когда будет?

    Let me carry them, I'm going up to the eleventh anyway. And when's the promised new elevator coming?

  4. B

    На двери же объявление: в связи с заменой лифт не работает до сентября. Ещё два месяца пешком!

    There's a notice on the door: due to its replacement, the elevator is out of service until September. Two more months on foot!

    Знаете что, давайте я буду вам продукты покупать, пока новый лифт не запустят. Мне несложно.

    You know what, let me buy your groceries until they get the new elevator running. It's no trouble for me.

    Неудобно как-то, у вас своих дел хватает. Но спасибо, мир не без добрых людей.

    I feel a bit awkward, you've got enough to do yourself. But thank you, there are still kind people in the world.

    Никаких «неудобно», мы же соседи. Пишите список, завтра после работы всё принесу.

    None of that "awkward", we're neighbours. Write a list, I'll bring everything tomorrow after work.
