Day 53: Stranded on the Highway

On a January evening, a driver calls his friend from an empty stretch of highway between Tyumen and Yekaterinburg.

    Серёга, беда. Стою на трассе под Тюменью: машина заглохла и не заводится.

    Seryoga, I'm in trouble. I'm stuck on the highway near Tyumen: the car stalled and won't start.

    Ничего себе. Может, аккумулятор сел на таком морозе?

    Wow. Maybe the battery died in this frost?

    Нет, фары горят. И бензин есть, так что дело не в нём.

    No, the headlights are on. And there's gas, so that's not it.

    Тогда нужен механик. Сейчас пришлю номер проверенного мастера, он и по телефону подскажет.

    Then you need a mechanic. I'll send you the number of a mechanic I trust, he can help even over the phone.

    Спасибо. Поскольку вокруг ни одной машины, рассчитывать больше не на кого.

    Thanks. Since there's not a single car around, there's no one else to count on.

    Позвони ему сразу. И аварийку включи, пока совсем не стемнело.

    Call him right away. And turn on your hazard lights before it gets completely dark.

    Аварийка давно включена. А эвакуатор только на крайний случай: он отсюда дороже машины выйдет.

    The hazards have been on for ages. And a tow truck is only a last resort: from out here it'll cost more than the car.
