Grandad, I found a bundle of letters on the top shelf. 'To Lyuba, Irkutsk': are they to Grandma?

Yes, to her. I thought she'd thrown them out long ago, but it seems she kept them all her life.

Read me one, will you? I don't really know how you ended up on the BAM.

On a Komsomol assignment, in '75, if memory serves. Here, listen: 'Lyubasha, it's nearly fifty below, and we're laying rails and singing, can you imagine?'
-
A
Fifty below, and you're singing? I think you were all a bit crazy out there.
-
B
We were young, which is the same thing. In summer there was no time for songs: you couldn't leave the tent without putting on a net, or the midges would eat you alive.

A
And do you still have friends from those days? You hardly ever talk about them.
-
B
I do, not many, but tested by the taiga. Here, about Vitka: 'Vitka gave me his felt boots again and caught a cold himself, the idiot.'

Is that Uncle Vitya, who brings us omul every summer? Now I see why you two stand by each other through thick and thin.
