Day 12: Flooding the Yard Rink

On a frosty December night in Chelyabinsk, two fathers flood the courtyard hockey rink for their sons.

    Минус двадцать пять, для катка самое то! Сегодня зальём, и в субботу пацаны на льду.

    Minus twenty-five, just right for a rink! We'll flood it tonight, and on Saturday the boys will be on the ice.

    За раз не зальём, будем заливать всю неделю, слоями. Иначе лёд трещинами пойдёт.

    We won't do it in one go, we'll be flooding it all week, in layers. Otherwise the ice will crack.

    Какую неделю? Мой отец за одну ночь заливал, и всё шло как по маслу.

    What week? My dad did it in one night, and it all went like clockwork.

    Твой отец и в валенках на воротах стоял. Сейчас заливают по науке.

    Your dad also kept goal in felt boots. Nowadays it's done scientifically.

    По науке... Ладно, профессор, какая толщина нужна? Лей давай, а то до утра проспорим.

    Scientifically... Fine, professor, what thickness do we need? Just pour, or we'll be arguing till morning.

    Сантиметров десять, не меньше. Так... погоди, а почему вода не идёт?

    Ten centimetres at least. Right... wait, why isn't the water coming?

    Приехали... Шланг замёрз, пока мы спорили. Хоть вместо клюшки его бери.

    Well, that's that... The hose froze while we were arguing. You could use it as a hockey stick now.
