Day 46: Right Seat, Wrong Train

On a train about to leave Leningradsky station in Moscow for Saint Petersburg, a passenger settles into his seat as the conductor comes round.

    Простите, а чай после отправления будут разносить? С утра маковой росинки во рту не было.

    Excuse me, will you be bringing tea round after departure? I haven't had a bite since morning.

    Будут. Ваш билет, пожалуйста... Место ваше, а вот поезд, извините, не ваш.

    We will. Your ticket, please... The seat's yours, but the train, I'm sorry, isn't.

    Как не мой? Петербург, двадцатое марта, пятый вагон, вот же, чёрным по белому!

    What do you mean, not mine? Petersburg, the twentieth of March, carriage five, it's right here in black and white!

    Всё так, только ваш поезд отправляется в девятнадцать сорок, а этот через пять минут.

    All true, only your train departs at 19:40, and this one leaves in five minutes.

    Вот это номер... Это я, выходит, на сорок минут раньше явился?

    Well, how about that... So I've turned up forty minutes early?

  6. B

    Выходит, так. Попрошу вас взять вещи и пройти на выход, сейчас подойдёт пассажир с этим местом.

    So it seems. I'll have to ask you to take your things and proceed to the exit, the passenger for this seat will be here any moment.

    Эх, а я так удобно устроился... Может, я с ним поменяюсь, место-то одно и то же?

    Oh, and I'd got so comfortable... Maybe I could swap with him, it's the same seat after all?

    Это уж как он решит. А чай в вашем поезде тоже будет, всего на сорок минут позже.

    That's up to him. And there'll be tea on your train too, just forty minutes later.
