   I didn't take offence. What could be funny, in a queue like ours?

   Chekhov, "The Death of a Civil Servant". A clerk called Chervyakov sneezes on a general's bald head and apologises so much that he dies of it.

   Oh, that's nothing. Take a look at window three: we've got our own general sitting there.

   That's just what I mean. A story written more than a hundred years ago, and it reads like a report from this very room.

   And do you remember "Fat and Thin"? How the thin one, on hearing his friend's rank, instantly started up with "Your Excellency"?
