Day 66: Negotiating Pocket Money

In a flat in Ulyanovsk, a sixteen-year-old asks his father for more pocket money while his grandfather listens from the sofa.

    Пап, давай пересмотрим мои карманные. Три тысячи в месяц по нынешним ценам, извини, это смехотворно.

    Dad, let's review my pocket money. Three thousand a month at today's prices is, sorry, laughable.

    Смехотворно ему, видите ли. Хочешь прибавку, так иди и заработай, а не клянчи у отца.

    Laughable, if you please. If you want a raise, go and earn it, instead of begging your father.

    Где, в шестнадцать лет? Ладно, а если закончу четверть без троек, прибавишь?

    Where, at sixteen? Okay, what if I finish the term without a single C, will you give me more?

    Раскошелюсь, но при условии, что без троек будет по всем предметам, включая физику.

    I'll dig into my pocket, but on condition that there are no Cs in any subject, physics included.

    In my day there was no such thing as pocket money. We slaved away at the car factory in the summer and saved up for a bike ourselves.

    Grandad, these days at sixteen they won't even hire you as a courier in most places. I'm a dependant against my will, you might say.

    А я возьму, без всякого резюме. По субботам помогаешь мне в гараже с «Волгой», плачу пятьсот за день.

    Well, I'll hire you, and no CV required. On Saturdays you help me in the garage with the Volga, and I pay five hundred a day.
