Day 8: A Scarecrow in Grandpa's Jacket

At a dacha near Tula in June, a grandfather and his grandson make a scarecrow to keep the starlings off the cherries.

    Держи куртку, я в ней ещё на завод ходил. Скворцы увидят и разлетятся.

    Here, take the jacket, I used to wear it to the factory. The starlings will see it and scatter.

    Дед, эта куртка сама как пугало. Давай лучше диски повесим, скворцы блеска боятся.

    Grandpa, that jacket's a scarecrow already. Let's hang up CDs instead, starlings are scared of glitter.

    Диски... Твои, с музыкой? Ну хоть какая-то польза от них будет.

    CDs... Yours, with the music? Well, at least they'll be some use.

    Очень смешно. Ладно, куртку надеваем, диски на рукава, а на голову шляпу.

    Very funny. All right, the jacket goes on, CDs on the sleeves, and a hat on its head.

    Ну и красавец получился! Голь на выдумки хитра: ни копейки не потратили.

    What a handsome fellow we've made! Necessity is the mother of invention: we didn't spend a kopeck.

    Ну что, дед, испугались твои скворцы? Глянь, один на шляпе сидит, вишню клюёт.

    Well, Grandpa, are your starlings scared? Look, one's sitting on the hat, pecking a cherry.

    Это его твои диски ослепили. Ладно, поделимся урожаем: им верхушка, нам остальное.

    It's your CDs that blinded him. Oh well, we'll share the harvest: the top of the tree for them, the rest for us.
