Day 81: Soundproofing for a Drummer

In a flat in Yekaterinburg, a young drummer introduces the contractor soundproofing his room to the downstairs neighbour, who has come up to see whether the work will really help.

    Знакомьтесь: это Анатолий Сергеевич, мой сосед снизу. Хочет понять, спасёт ли его ваша звукоизоляция от моих барабанов.

    Let me introduce you: this is Anatoly Sergeyevich, my downstairs neighbour. He wants to know whether your soundproofing will save him from my drums.

    Именно. Я тридцать лет живу под этой квартирой, но такого грохота тут не бывало.

    Exactly. I've lived under this flat for thirty years, but there's never been a racket like this.

    Скажу честно: в панельке барабаны полностью не заглушить, удар идёт прямо через перекрытие.

    I'll be honest: in a panel building you can't completely silence drums, the impact goes straight through the floor slab.

    То есть толку от всей этой затеи, по сути, никакого?

    So this whole thing is basically pointless?

    Толк будет. Мы собираем «комнату в комнате»: плавающий пол на виброопорах, стены на отдельном каркасе, и шум падает децибел на сорок.

    It's not pointless. We're building a "room within a room": a floating floor on anti-vibration mounts, walls on a separate frame, and the noise drops by about forty decibels.

    Сорок децибел, это много или мало? Вы мне по-человечески скажите, я спать смогу?

    Forty decibels, is that a lot or a little? Tell me in plain language, will I be able to sleep?

    Барабаны будут слышны примерно как телевизор у соседей. Тем не менее после девяти я бы по бочке не бил.

    The drums will sound about like a neighbour's TV. Even so, I wouldn't touch the bass drum after nine.

    Да я и не собирался. Давайте так: по будням репетирую с шести до девяти, а в выходные днём.

    I wasn't going to anyway. How about this: on weekdays I practise from six to nine, and at weekends in the daytime.

    По рукам. Впрочем, если в девять ноль одну услышу бочку, приду уже не знакомиться.

    Deal. Mind you, if I hear that bass drum at one minute past nine, I won't be coming up to get acquainted.
