   Look, Pasha, this is a copy of the first version of the table, from as far back as 1869. Impressive?

   Ещё бы. А правда, что, как говорил экскурсовод, таблица ему просто приснилась?

   You bet. But is it true, like the guide said, that the table simply came to him in a dream?

   По легенде, он уснул за столом, а проснулся с готовой таблицей. Впрочем, сам он эту историю, говорят, терпеть не мог.

   According to legend, he fell asleep at his desk and woke up with the table finished. Mind you, they say he himself couldn't stand that story.

   Почему? По-моему, приснилось, значит, гений: мне бы такое озарение перед контрольной.

   Why? If it came to him in a dream, that makes him a genius, I'd say: I could do with a flash of insight like that before a test.

   Потому что он над ней лет двадцать думал. Так и говорил: «А вы думаете: сидел, и вдруг готово».

   Because he'd been thinking about it for some twenty years. That's just what he said: "And you think I just sat there and suddenly it was done."

   Unlikely. He wrote the elements out on cards and spent weeks laying them out, like a game of patience, until it all fitted.

   То-то и оно. Про сон рассказывать интересно, а о том, как люди годами кропотливо сидят над карточками, легенд не слагают.

   That's just it. A dream makes a good story, but nobody makes up legends about people toiling over cards for years.
