   So, Dima is back from Moscow with a plan, and the plan, I'll be honest, is an expensive one. Go ahead, only no slides.

   No slides it is. Two CNC machines, and the cost of making a chair drops almost by half, with payback in about two years.

   By half, you say? Dima, you used to sweep up sawdust in my workshop. A machine won't fit a tenon for you so that a chair lasts a hundred years.

   It will, Stepan Ilyich, to a tenth of a millimetre. You've done everything by eye all your life, and eyes, forgive me, don't get any younger.

   Dmitry, easy there. Stepan Ilyich was making our furniture when you were knee-high to a grasshopper. Oleg Viktorovich, what do the numbers say?

   Палка о двух концах, Николай Петрович. Табуретки убыточны, зато заказы из массива дают семьдесят процентов прибыли, а их делает один Степан Ильич.

   It cuts both ways, Nikolai Petrovich. The stools lose money, but the solid wood orders bring in seventy percent of the profit, and Stepan Ilyich makes them on his own.

   So much for automation. Even so, I'm not against the machines: my hands aren't what they were, and in ten years I've had exactly one apprentice.
