   Ну, Палыч, давай, рассказывай про свою щуку восемьдесят седьмого. Посмотрим, на сколько она за зиму подросла.

   Come on, Palych, tell us about your pike from eighty-seven. Let's see how much it's grown over the winter.

   Смейся, смейся. В июне было, у самого шлюза, я с лодки на блесну ловил, и как дёрнет, чуть меня за борт не утащила.

   Go ahead, laugh. It was in June, right by the lock, I was spinning from the boat, and then it yanked so hard it nearly pulled me overboard.

   Ну вот, уже и за борт. В прошлом году ты только спиннинг сломал, а позапрошлым летом она сама в лодку запрыгнула.

   There you go, overboard now. Last year you only broke your rod, and the summer before that it jumped into the boat all by itself.

   Не перебивай старших. Тащил я её минут сорок, а как вытащил, она в лодке еле поместилась: кило на пятнадцать, вот те крест.

   Don't interrupt your elders. I reeled it in for forty minutes, and when I landed it, it barely fitted in the boat: fifteen kilos, I swear to God.

   Пятнадцать! Ну ты загнул, Палыч. Прошлой осенью было двенадцать, а в девяностом, помнится, восемь с половиной.

   Fifteen! Now you've really overdone it, Palych. Last autumn it was twelve, and back in ninety, as I recall, eight and a half.

   Рыба, Гена, как и слава, после смерти только растёт. Иваныч, ну хоть ты скажи, ты же на берегу стоял, свидетель.

   A fish, Gena, is like fame: it only grows after death. Ivanych, you tell him, you were standing on the bank, you're a witness.

   Я, Палыч, тридцать лет детей учил не врать. Прямо чеховский «Налим» у вас: шуму на всю Волгу, а рыбы нет.

   Palych, I spent thirty years teaching children not to lie. It's just like Chekhov's The Burbot with you: noise all along the Volga, and no fish.

    То-то и оно. Поймал её я, а Палыч подсачек держал и чуть не упустил. Так что он сорок лет про мою щуку рассказывает.

    Ну и что? Подсачек держать тоже уметь надо. Щука, Гена, была общая: восемь кило его, восемь моих, вот тебе и пятнадцать с гаком.

    So what? Holding a landing net takes skill too. The pike was shared, Gena: eight kilos his, eight mine, and there you have fifteen and then some.
