   Миша, стой, не трогай! Видишь, что из обрыва торчит? Это не коряга, а бивень, и, судя по изгибу, мамонтовый.

   Misha, stop, don't touch it! See what's sticking out of the bank? That's not a snag, it's a tusk, and judging by the curve, a mammoth's.

   Ничего себе! Евгений Михайлович, говорят, за такой бивень перекупщики платят как за квартиру.

   Wow! Yevgeny Mikhailovich, they say dealers pay as much as a flat for a tusk like that.

   Платят, Миша, а суд потом добавляет. Без лицензии собирать мамонтовую кость здесь запрещено, а мы, напомню, геологическая экспедиция, а не старатели.

   They pay, Misha, and then the court adds its share. Collecting mammoth ivory without a licence is banned here, and we, let me remind you, are a geological expedition, not prospectors.

   Закон законом, а река ждать не станет. Мерзлота тает, берег за лето на два метра отступил, к утру ваш бивень уплывёт.

   The law is the law, but the river won't wait. The permafrost is thawing, the bank has gone back two metres this summer, and by morning your tusk will float away.

   Then let's pull it out and hand it in to a museum, since we can't sell it. Who does that hurt?

   Хуже будет науке, если выдернем его, как морковку. Палеонтологу важен не столько бивень, сколько то, что вокруг: слой, глубина, соседние кости.

   It hurts science if we yank it out like a carrot. What matters to a palaeontologist isn't so much the tusk as what's around it: the layer, the depth, the bones next to it.

   Кости, говорите? Мишка, дай-ка лопатку. Смотрите: выше бивня, в самой мерзлоте, рыжая шерсть клоками торчит.

   Bones, you say? Mishka, hand me the trowel. Look: above the tusk, right in the permafrost, there are tufts of reddish hair sticking out.

   Шерсть... Если это то, о чём я думаю, там не бивень, а целая туша, и тогда это находка десятилетия.

   Hair... If it's what I think it is, that's not a tusk, it's a whole carcass, and then it's the find of the decade.

    Exactly. So here's the plan: we take photos, write down the coordinates, and I call the palaeontologists in Yakutsk on the satellite phone.

    А берег до их прилёта я брезентом укрою и мешками подопру, чтобы река не забрала. Нам не впервой: позапрошлым летом так же носорога сторожили.

    And until they fly in, I'll cover the bank with a tarpaulin and prop it up with sandbags so the river doesn't take it. It's not our first time: the summer before last we guarded a rhino the same way.

    You see, Misha, and you were going on about a flat. Your term paper has just turned into a dissertation, and believe me, that's worth more than any money.
