   Grisha, I've come up with one for the New Year issue: "Found both at the registry office and at the factory", four letters. Elegant, if you ask me.

   Брак? Изящно, но этому каламбуру сто лет в обед. Вот, послушай мой: «Девичья краса, которую точат на лугу», четыре буквы.

   Brak, marriage or defects? Elegant, but that pun is as old as the hills. Here, listen to mine: "A maiden's pride that gets sharpened in the meadow", four letters.

   Коса. Красиво, но придерутся: девичью косу не точат, а заплетают, половинки у тебя не сходятся.

   Kosa, a braid or a scythe. Pretty, but people will nitpick: you don't sharpen a girl's braid, you plait it, your two halves don't match.

   В том-то и соль: в каламбуре половинки и не должны сходиться. Ладно, теперь главное: семь букв по горизонтали, третья «л», пятая «д».

   That's the whole point: in a pun the halves aren't supposed to match. All right, now the main one: seven letters across, the third letter L, the fifth D.

   Вопрос у меня готов: «Без чего не обходится новогодний стол». Ответ, разумеется, холодец.

   I've got the clue ready: "No New Year table is complete without it." The answer is aspic, of course: kholodets.

   Какой холодец? Селёдка! Под шубой, как у людей. Посчитай: семь букв, третья «л», пятая «д».

   What aspic? Herring, selyodka! Under a fur coat, like all normal people. Count it: seven letters, the third L, the fifth D.

   K-h-o-l-o-d-e-t-s... S-e-l-y-o-d-k-a... Listen, they both fit! Thirty years compiling crosswords, and I've never seen anything like it.

   Вот тебе и задачка с двумя ответами. Нас же письмами засыплют: пол-Минска за холодец, пол-Минска за селёдку.

   So much for a puzzle with one answer: this one has two. They'll bury us in letters: half of Minsk for the aspic, half of Minsk for the herring.

   Можно переписать вопрос, чтобы подходил один ответ. Для холодца, например: «Дрожит, хотя ему не холодно».

   We could rewrite the clue so that only one answer fits. For the aspic, say: "It trembles, though it isn't cold."

    Неплохо. А для селёдки: «Всю зиму в шубе, а из холодильника не выходит». Только, знаешь, выбирать жалко.

    Not bad. And for the herring: "Wears a fur coat all winter, yet never leaves the fridge." But you know, it's a shame to choose.

    Годится. А в январском номере напечатаем ответ: «Холодец или селёдка, смотря у кого вы встречали Новый год».

    Fine by me. And in the January issue we'll print the answer: "Aspic or herring, depending on whose house you saw in the New Year at."
