   This is the third parish register I've gone through, and still no great-grandfather. Maybe I'm looking in the wrong place altogether?

   Не исключено. Поморы часто числились в городе мещанами, а детей крестили и венчались у себя в деревне, на берегу.

   Quite possibly. Pomors were often registered in town as meshchane, but they christened their children and got married back in their villages on the coast.

   Meshchane? I thought a meshchanin was a philistine, a man with geraniums on the windowsill.

   Это уже литература постаралась. А в документах это всего лишь сословие: городские жители, торговцы, ремесленники, в том числе и шкиперы.

   That's literature's doing. In documents it's simply a social estate: townspeople, traders, craftsmen, and skippers too.

   My grandmother used to say he sailed a schooner to Norway: flour on the way there, cod on the way back.

   Then let's come at it from another side: the port customs fund, inventory three, registers of vessels with their skippers. What year?

   Году в девятом. Бабушка ещё говорила, что шхуна была старинная, вроде коча.

   Around 1909. Grandmother also said the schooner was an old-fashioned one, something like a koch.

   Коч ваш прадед разве что на картинке видел: их запретили строить ещё при Петре. А вот и реестр: шхуна «Святой Николай», шкипер Шубин Гавриил, мещанин.

   Your great-grandfather would only have seen a koch in a picture: building them was banned back under Peter the Great. And here's the register: the schooner Saint Nicholas, skipper Gavriil Shubin, meshchanin.

   That's him! Grandmother always called him just that: Grandpa Gavrila. Wait, what's this in the margin, in pencil?

    And Grandmother said all her life that he was lost at sea. So he didn't drown, he just changed parishes.
