Day 70: Our Idea on Someone Else's Slides

After a client meeting at a Moscow advertising agency, a copywriter and an art director talk about what a colleague has just presented.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title.
  2. Read the dialogue and its translation. The audio for this lesson is coming soon.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Russian audio, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

  1. A

Did you see that? That's our concept word for word: the slogan, the moose on a bicycle, even the font you spent three nights choosing.

  2. B

I saw. And how modestly Gena lowered his eyes when the client asked whose idea it was.

  3. A

Modestly! He simply stole it and passed it off as his own. I'd go to Olga Pavlovna right now and lay it all out.

  4. B

And what are you going to show her? No proof, no crime. Have you got a single piece of evidence apart from your honest eyes?

  5. A

There are drafts... Actually, no: we discussed it all by the water cooler and sketched on scraps of paper that went in the bin long ago.

  6. B

Exactly. If you make a scene now, the bosses will see you as the jealous one and him as the victim.

  7. A

So we just swallow it and keep quiet? We spent a week on that brief, and he was even late for the pitch.

  8. B

Why swallow it? The client's delighted and in a week will want the concept developed. What will Gena show them if he's got nothing but the slogan?

  9. A

Hang on... We've got three more scripts with the same moose in our folder, and he has no idea they exist.

  10. B

That's what I'm getting at. At the meeting I'll ask the author, oh so casually, to tell us how he sees the idea developing.

  11. A

And he'll flounder on the very first question, and we'll pull out the scripts. Cruel, of course, but fair, I think.

  12. B

No cruelty at all, just professional ethics. Only, I beg you, don't smile like that before the meeting, or he'll figure it all out.
