Day 71: The Inspector and the Headlight

On a road near Pskov at dusk, a traffic police inspector stops a middle-aged driver.

    Добрый вечер. Инспектор ДПС, старший лейтенант полиции Бельский. Предъявите, пожалуйста, водительское удостоверение и документы на машину.

    Good evening. Traffic police inspector, Senior Lieutenant Belsky. Please show me your driving licence and the car's documents.

    Добрый вечер, вот, пожалуйста. А в чём причина остановки, если не секрет?

    Good evening, here you are. And what's the reason for stopping me, if it's not a secret?

    У вас не горит левая фара. В тёмное время суток это нарушение: предупреждение или штраф пятьсот рублей.

    Your left headlight isn't working. After dark that's an offence: a warning or a five-hundred-rouble fine.

    Надо же, утром ещё горела. Товарищ старший лейтенант, я электрик, в багажнике запасная лампа и инструмент. Дайте мне пять минут, исправлю прямо здесь.

    Well, I never, it was working this morning. Senior Lieutenant, I'm an electrician, I've got a spare bulb and tools in the boot. Give me five minutes and I'll fix it right here.

    Протокол я пока составлять не буду. Пять минут, и включите аварийку.

    I won't write you up for now. Five minutes, and switch on your hazard lights.

    Так, лампа целая, нить не перегорела, цоколь чистый. Значит, дело в разъёме или в предохранителе.

    Right, the bulb is fine, the filament hasn't burnt out, the base is clean. So it's either the connector or the fuse.

    Лекцию, пожалуйста, не читайте, у меня смена до утра. Горит или не горит?

    Please spare me the lecture, my shift runs till morning. Is it working or not?

    Сейчас загорится. Вот, окислился контакт в разъёме, зачищаю... Прошу!

    It'll come on in a second. There, the contact in the connector has oxidised, I'm cleaning it... Voilà!

    Горит. Что ж, в таком случае ограничусь устным замечанием.
