   Vadim Petrovich, disaster. My voice is completely gone, since this morning I've just been wheezing like a kettle.

   Геннадий Семёнович, вы что, издеваетесь? Концерт через час, а у нас «Ныне отпущаеши», и нижнее си-бемоль, кроме вас, никто не берёт.

   Gennady Semyonovich, are you joking? The concert's in an hour, we've got 'Nunc Dimittis' on, and nobody but you can hit the low B-flat.

   Не издеваюсь, связки подвели. Вчера на рыбалке, видимо, продуло, а может, годы своё берут.

   I'm not joking, my vocal cords have let me down. I must have caught a chill fishing yesterday, or maybe the years are taking their toll.

   Вадим Петрович, разрешите мне. Я эту партию учил и дома до си-бемоль опускаюсь, правда, только когда как следует распоюсь.

   Vadim Petrovich, let me do it. I've learnt the part, and at home I get down to the B-flat, though only once I've warmed up properly.

   Алексей, одно дело дома, совсем другое на сцене. Октавист вы ещё молодой, а там ноту держать долго, да ещё на пианиссимо.

   Alexei, home is one thing, the stage is quite another. You're still a young octavist, and there the note has to be held a long time, and pianissimo at that.

   Let him sing, Vadim Petrovich. I'll stand next to him and hold his elbow, for confidence.

   Only, Gennady Semyonovich, please don't sing along. With your whisper we'll sound like a draught in a cathedral.

   Enough jokes. Alexei, go and warm up, and I'll think about whether we should raise the key a semitone.

   Just not more than a semitone. Otherwise it won't be Rachmaninoff any more, it'll be amateur hour.
