   Well, Andrei, have you read Shuklin's will? The flat on Nemiga Street goes to whichever grandson finishes university first. How about that?

   Прочитал, Николай Степанович, и не понимаю, законно ли это. Получается, дед из могилы решает, кому учиться, и устраивает внукам гонку.

   I have, Nikolai Stepanovich, and I can't tell whether it's even legal. It means the grandfather decides from the grave who studies and makes his grandsons race each other.

   Завещатель вправе распорядиться имуществом как пожелает, если это не противоречит закону. А учиться никого не заставляют: не хочешь, не учись.

   A testator is entitled to dispose of his property as he wishes, as long as it's within the law. And nobody's forced to study: if you don't want to, don't.

   Но ведь условие явно ущемляет права наследников. Может, кто-то из них имеет право на обязательную долю?

   But the condition clearly infringes on the heirs' rights. Maybe one of them has a right to a compulsory share?

   Обязательная доля положена нетрудоспособным детям, супругу, родителям и иждивенцам, а не здоровым внукам с гитарой. Ты что, забыл, чему тебя пять лет учили?

   A compulsory share goes to children, a spouse or parents who are unable to work, and to dependants, not to healthy grandsons with guitars. Have you forgotten what they taught you for five years?

   Не забыл, просто ищу, за что зацепиться. Клиент хочет оспорить завещание, говорит, что условие унизительное.

   I haven't, I'm just looking for something to hold on to. The client wants to contest the will, he says the condition is humiliating.

   Унизительно, по-моему, в двадцать девять лет бросать институт уже в третий раз. Покойный, впрочем, судя по всему, прекрасно знал своего внука.

   What's humiliating, in my view, is dropping out of college for the third time at twenty-nine. The deceased, mind you, clearly knew his grandson very well.

   Есть ещё деталь: второму внуку, двоюродному брату клиента, всего двенадцать, он в шестом классе.

   There's one more detail: the other grandson, the client's cousin, is only twelve, he's in sixth grade.

   Вот видишь: у нашего клиента фора лет в десять, а он собирается судиться. Нынче, я смотрю, проще иск подать, чем диплом получить.

   There you are: our client has a head start of about ten years, and he wants to go to court. Nowadays, I see, it's easier to file a lawsuit than to get a degree.

    Так, может, вместо иска посоветуем ему заочное отделение? Шансы на успех, согласитесь, там куда выше, чем в суде.

    So maybe instead of a lawsuit we advise him to study by correspondence? His chances of success there, you'll agree, are much better than in court.
