Day 85: Sick Note for a Fishing Trip

In a kitchen in Ufa, Seryozha, a sales manager, asks his old friend Rustam, a doctor, for an unusual favour.

    Рустам, выручай. Мужики едут на Юрюзань за хариусом, а начальник мне отпуск не подписывает.

    Rustam, help me out. The guys are going to the Yuryuzan for grayling, and my boss won't sign off my leave.

    Так, и ты хочешь, чтобы я тебе нарисовал больничный? Я правильно понимаю этот печальный взгляд?

    Right, and you want me to conjure up a sick note for you? Am I reading that sad look correctly?

    Не нарисовал, а оформил. Поставь мне ОРВИ, дело житейское, никто проверять не станет.

    Not conjure up, issue. Put me down with a bad cold, it happens to everyone, nobody's going to check.

    Серёж, больничный теперь электронный, всё в системе. Это не справка на коленке, это подлог, уголовная статья.

    Seryozha, sick notes are electronic now, it's all in the system. This isn't a note scribbled on your knee, it's forgery, a criminal offence.

    Да брось ты, кто там смотрит? Три дня насморка, никто и не заметит.

    Oh, come on, who's looking? Three days of runny nose, nobody will even notice.

    А если бы все так делали? Я выписываю тебе, завтра соседу на дачу, послезавтра шурину на футбол, и через месяц на больничном сидят одни здоровые.

    And what if everybody did that? I write one for you, tomorrow one for a neighbour for his dacha, the day after for my brother-in-law for the football, and in a month the only people off sick are the healthy ones.

    Ну ты прямо как на партсобрании. Я же не прошу тебя банк ограбить, всего лишь бумажку на рыбалку.

    You sound like you're at a Party meeting. I'm not asking you to rob a bank, just a bit of paper for a fishing trip.

    Дело не в бумажке, а в принципе. Совесть, брат, не хариус: отпустишь, обратно уже не поймаешь.

    It's not about the bit of paper, it's the principle. A conscience, mate, isn't a grayling: let it go and you won't catch it again.

    Красиво излагаешь. Значит, буду сидеть в офисе и смотреть в чате, как они хариусов тягают.

    Nicely put. So I'll be sitting in the office watching them haul in grayling in the group chat.

    Не спеши страдать. Они на сколько едут, до воскресенья? У меня как раз отгулы за дежурства, а у тестя лодка с мотором простаивает.

    Don't start suffering yet. How long are they going for, till Sunday? I happen to have time off owed for my on-call shifts, and my father-in-law's motorboat is just sitting there.

    И что толку? Меня-то начальник всё равно не отпустит, хоть с лодкой, хоть без.

    And what good is that? My boss still won't let me go, boat or no boat.

    Да и не надо. В пятницу после работы лодку на прицеп, и к рассвету мы у мужиков на Юрюзани. Здоровые, заметь, и с чистой совестью.

    No need. Friday after work, the boat goes on the trailer, and by dawn we're with the guys on the Yuryuzan. Healthy, mind you, and with a clear conscience.
