Day 121: Same Building, Fifty Years Apart

In a flat in Minsk, a university student shows his grandfather something he found in the wardrobe.

    Grandpa, look what I found: your student card, issued in 1970!

    Ну надо же, я его лет двадцать не видел! Эх, политех, стипендия сорок рублей...

    Well I never, I haven't seen it in twenty years! Ah, the Polytechnic, a forty-ruble stipend...

    Сорок рублей? И на это можно было целый месяц жить?

    Forty rubles? And you could live on that for a whole month?

    Жили, и неплохо! А летом в стройотряде фермы строили, я на мотоцикл заработал.

    We did, and not badly! And in the summers we built farms with a student building team, I earned enough for a motorbike.

    А с кем ты в стройотряд ездил, с друзьями?

    And who did you go to the building team with, your friends?

    Нас трое было, водой не разольёшь. Жили в общежитии, а лекции слушали в первом корпусе, с колоннами.

    There were three of us, thick as thieves. We lived in the dorm and had our lectures in Building One, the one with the columns.

    В первом корпусе, с колоннами? Так у меня же там каждый день лекции!

    Building One, with the columns? But I have lectures there every day!
