Day 156: Honest Data for the Grant

At a physics laboratory in Dubna, a young researcher shows the head of the lab the grant application he has almost finished.

    Борис Аркадьевич, заявка почти готова. Только третий эксперимент я предлагаю не упоминать.

    Boris Arkadyevich, the application is almost ready. Only I suggest we leave out the third experiment.

    Это ещё почему? Мы на него полгода потратили, и провели его, между прочим, безупречно.

    And why is that? We spent six months on it, and we ran it flawlessly, I might add.

    Потому что полученные данные ничего не подтвердили. Комиссия решит, что деньги ушли впустую.

    Because the data we got didn't confirm anything. The committee will decide the money went down the drain.

    Несмотря на это, выбрасывать его нельзя. Отрицательный результат тоже результат, это азбука науки.

    Even so, we can't throw it out. A negative result is still a result, that's the ABC of science.

    Азбука азбукой, а гранты дают за открытия, а не за честность.

    ABC or not, grants are given for discoveries, not for honesty.

    А ты подай его как открытие: этот путь закрыт, и другим не придётся тратить на него годы.

    Then present it as a discovery: this road is closed, and others won't have to spend years on it.

    Хм... «Проведённый эксперимент исключил целое направление поиска». А ведь звучит солидно!

    Hmm... "The experiment carried out has ruled out an entire line of research." That actually sounds impressive!
