Day 127: What Is That Moving Light?

On a clear August night in the steppe near Orenburg, three amateur astronomers, one of them much older than the other two, spot a bright light crossing the sky.

    Гляньте-ка, левее Лебедя: яркая точка, и она явно движется. Это что ещё за явление?

    Look at that, left of Cygnus: a bright dot, and it's definitely moving. What on earth is that?

    Скорее всего, спутник. Хотя для обычного спутника она слишком яркая, так что не исключено, что это МКС.

    Most likely a satellite. Though it's too bright for an ordinary satellite, so it may well be the ISS.

    Станция так не мигает, а эта пульсирует, как маяк, раз в несколько секунд. Я бы не спешил с выводами.

    The station doesn't flicker like that, and this one pulses like a lighthouse every few seconds. I wouldn't jump to conclusions.

    Ну всё, началось. Сейчас ты скажешь, что братья по разуму прилетели посмотреть на наш телескоп.

    Here we go. Now you'll tell me our brothers in reason have flown in to take a look at our telescope.

    А почему бы и нет? Степь, ночь, на сто километров ни души: идеальное место для первого контакта.

    And why not? The steppe, the night, not a soul for a hundred kilometres: the perfect place for first contact.

    Не шумите, дайте проверить. У меня распечатка пролётов на эту ночь, перед выездом свежую сделал.

    Keep it down, let me check. I've got a printout of tonight's passes, I made a fresh one before we set off.

    Николай Степанович, вы что, до сих пор на бумаге? Есть же приложение, оно всё показывает за секунду.

    Nikolai Stepanovich, are you still using paper? There's an app for that, it shows everything in a second.

    Приложение без связи в степи бесполезно, а бумага не подведёт. Всё сходится: это отработавшая ступень ракеты, она кувыркается на орбите, вот и мигает.

    An app is useless in the steppe with no signal, but paper won't let you down. It all fits: it's a spent rocket stage, it's tumbling in orbit, that's why it flickers.

    Эх, такой контакт сорвался. Ладно, записываю в журнал: «Неопознанный объект опознан, во Вселенной мы пока одни».

    Oh well, so much for first contact. All right, I'm writing in the log: "Unidentified object identified, we're alone in the universe for now."
