   Guys, I need some advice. A former employee, Vitya, has asked me for a reference, and "the very best one" at that.

   And does he deserve it? Judging by your face, not really.

   Работник он, прямо скажем, так себе: опаздывал, сроки срывал. Но человек золотой, всем помогал, коллектив его обожал.

   As a worker he was, frankly, so-so: he was late, he missed deadlines. But he's a lovely person, he helped everyone, the whole team adored him.

   Обычное дело, пиши обтекаемо: «не всегда проявлял инициативу», зато «отличался исключительной отзывчивостью». Любой кадровик поймёт.

   That's common enough, word it carefully: "did not always show initiative", but "was exceptionally helpful". Any HR person will get it.

   Только без прямого вранья. Если бы мне принесли такую бумагу, я бы сразу позвонил автору и уточнил, что он имел в виду.

   Just no outright lies. If someone brought me a paper like that, I'd ring the author straight away and ask what he meant.

   That's exactly what I'm afraid of. I don't want to lie, I don't want to sink the lad either, and I can't bring myself to say no to him.

   Then think about where he's applying. Maybe his strengths matter more there than punctuality?

   That's true, there are places where what matters isn't deadlines but knowing how to talk to people: a volunteer centre, customer support.

   Точно, он же в поддержку и собирался. Напишу честно: с дисциплиной было туго, но с клиентами лучше него никого, и подпишусь под каждым словом.

   That's it, support is exactly where he's going. I'll write it honestly: discipline was a struggle, but nobody was better with clients, and I'll stand by every word.
