Day 17: Every Night at Three

In a courtyard in Pskov, a young father stops his elderly neighbour to talk about his car.

    Михаил Степанович, не хотел беспокоить, но ваша машина воет каждую ночь в три.

    Mikhail Stepanovich, I didn't want to bother you, but your car howls every night at three.

    Сигнализация? Быть не может, я её на днях проверял.

    The alarm? That can't be, I checked it just the other day.

    Как только она завоет, сын просыпается, и до утра мы его укачиваем.

    As soon as it starts howling, my son wakes up, and we're rocking him till morning.

    Вот беда-то... А я сплю крепко, ничего не слышу. Пойдёмте посмотрим.

    What a nuisance... And I sleep soundly, I don't hear a thing. Let's go and have a look.

    Смотрите: на капоте следы лап и рыжая шерсть. Кто тут ночует?

    Look: there are paw prints on the bonnet and ginger fur. Who's been sleeping here?

    Так это Муська, соседская кошка! Я в два со смены приезжаю, она на тёплом капоте и спит.

    Oh, that's Muska, the neighbours' cat! I get back from my shift at two, and she sleeps on the warm bonnet.

    А к трём капот остывает, она спрыгивает, и сигнализация воет. Может, чувствительность убавите, а Муське я коробку поставлю?

    By three the bonnet has cooled, she jumps off, and the alarm starts howling. Maybe you could turn the sensitivity down, and I'll put out a box for Muska?
