Day 24: A Quiet Day for Lifeguards

On a hot July afternoon at a city beach on the Ob in Novosibirsk, two lifeguards sit on their tower.

    Ну и работа у спасателей: сидишь на вышке, загораешь. Мечта, а не служба!

    What a job lifeguards have: you sit on the tower and sunbathe. A dream, not a job!

  2. B

    Не сглазь. Год назад в такой же день троих чуть течением не унесло.

    Don't jinx it. A year ago, on a day just like this, three people were nearly swept away by the current.

    Да ладно тебе. Дети у берега плещутся, а весь пляж под зонтиками спит.

    Oh, come on. The kids are splashing by the shore, and the whole beach is asleep under umbrellas.

    Не весь. Глянь в бинокль: мужик на матрасе спит, а его на середину реки несёт.

    Not the whole beach. Look through the binoculars: there's a guy asleep on a lilo, and he's drifting to the middle of the river.

    Ох ты ж... Там же баржи ходят! Заводи лодку, я за кругом.

    Oh, blimey... Barges go through there! Start the boat, I'll grab the lifebuoy.

    Прыгай, отплываем! Только не ори, а то проснётся, перепугается и свалится.

    Jump in, we're off! Just don't yell, or he'll wake up, panic and fall in.

    Уважаемый, просыпаемся потихоньку... Вы на середине Оби, а у нас был такой тихий день.

    Sir, let's wake up nice and slowly... You're in the middle of the Ob, and we were having such a quiet day.
