Day 3: A Scooter on the Pavement

Outside a bakery in Kaliningrad, a young man on an electric scooter nearly knocks down a pensioner.

    Ой, простите ради бога, я вас не задел? Вы так внезапно из пекарни вышли...

    Oh, I'm so sorry, I didn't hit you, did I? You came out of the bakery so suddenly...

    Это я-то внезапно? Смотреть надо, куда едешь: тут тротуар, а не гоночная трасса.

    Me, suddenly? You should watch where you're going: this is a pavement, not a racetrack.

    Виноват, признаю. Хотя вообще-то по тротуару на самокате ездить не запрещено.

    My fault, I admit it. Although, actually, riding a scooter on the pavement isn't forbidden.

    Ездить разрешено, а пешеходам ты обязан уступать. Это в правилах есть, между прочим.

    Riding is allowed, but you're obliged to give way to pedestrians. That's in the rules, by the way.

    Вы так их цитируете, будто всю жизнь штрафы выписывали.

    You quote them as if you'd spent your whole life writing out fines.

    Тридцать лет в ГАИ, сынок, до майора дослужился. Таких гонщиков, как ты, я сотнями останавливал.

    Thirty years in the traffic police, son, I made it to major. I stopped racers like you by the hundred.

    Вот это я попал... Товарищ майор, разрешите ехать? Со скоростью пешехода, честное слово.

    Well, I've really landed myself in it... Comrade Major, permission to carry on? At walking pace, word of honour.
