Day 36: The Back After the Potatoes

At a massage clinic in Irkutsk, a man who spent the weekend at his dacha can barely climb onto the masseur's table.

    Ой, доктор, полегче! Я на стол-то еле забрался.

    Oh, doc, go easy! I barely managed to climb onto the table.

    Терпите, терпите. Поясница как камень: картошку, что ли, все выходные копали?

    Bear with it, bear with it. Your lower back's like stone: been digging potatoes all weekend or something?

    Шесть соток, как положено. Только это не возраст, вы не думайте, это лопата у меня тяжёлая.

    Six hundred square metres, as you do. But it's not my age, don't you think that, it's just that my spade is heavy.

    Ну да, лопата. А копали, небось, согнувшись в три погибели и без перекуров?

    Oh, sure, the spade. And I bet you dug bent double, without a single break?

    Ну а как ещё? Быстрее надо было, пока дожди не начались.

    Well, how else? I had to be quick, before the rains started.

    Вот в этом и беда. Не наклоняйтесь, а сгибайте колени, и каждые полчаса передышка.

    That's exactly the problem. Don't bend over, bend your knees, and take a breather every half hour.

    Каждые полчаса? Да меня соседи засмеют, лучше уж я к вам на массаж буду ходить.

    Every half hour? The neighbours would never let me hear the end of it, I'd rather keep coming to you for massages.
