Day 38: Midnight on the Night Shift

On New Year's Eve at a small railway station near Kotlas, the duty officer talks to the driver of a freight train held there for the night.

    Ну что, стоять вам до часу ночи, так что Новый год встречаете у нас.

    Well, you're stuck here till one in the morning, so you'll be seeing in the New Year with us.

    Что ж, не впервой. У меня термос с чаем, а у вас, смотрю, мандарины?

    Well, it's not the first time. I've got a thermos of tea, and you, I see, have tangerines?

    Жена целый пакет положила, как чувствовала. Заходите, с наступающим!

    My wife packed a whole bag, as if she knew. Come on in, and Happy New Year!

    И вас. А я однажды встречал Новый год в кабине, куранты по приёмнику слушал.

    Same to you. I once saw in the New Year in my cab, listening to the Kremlin chimes on a little radio.

    А ко мне как-то ровно в полночь лось на переезд вышел, так вдвоём и встретили.

    And once, at midnight on the dot, a moose walked out onto my level crossing, so the two of us saw it in together.

    Как Новый год встретишь, так его и проведёшь. Что, весь год с лосями?

    As you see in the New Year, so you'll spend it. What, a whole year with moose?
