   Tell me, is it true that the church on Kizhi was built without a single nail? That's what it says in the brochure.

   Легенда такая: мастер Нестор, закончив работу, будто бы забросил топор в Онежское озеро со словами: «Не было, нет и не будет такой».

   The legend goes that when master Nestor finished the work, he threw his axe into Lake Onega with the words: "There never was, there isn't, and there never will be another like it."

   Красиво. А топор-то зачем выбрасывать, хороший ведь инструмент?

   Lovely story. But why throw away the axe, it's a good tool, isn't it?

   Чтобы никто больше такую не срубил. Мастера тогда были с характером, не то что нынешние.

   So nobody else could build one like it. Craftsmen had character in those days, not like now.

   Тут, между нами, гиды кое о чём умалчивают. Сам сруб действительно собран без гвоздей, а вот осиновая чешуя на куполах прибита гвоздями.

   Between you and me, the guides leave something out here. The log frame itself really was put together without nails, but the aspen shingles on the domes are nailed on.

   So much for "without a single nail". Why don't the brochures say anything about it?

   Потому что «без единого гвоздя» продаётся лучше, чем «почти без гвоздей». Я сорок лет туристов вожу и знаю: легенду люди любят больше правды.

   Because "without a single nail" sells better than "almost without nails". I've been taking tourists out for forty years, and I know people love a legend more than the truth.
